JAPAN BRIDGE TOUR 2007


Be here now..
Being suspended at 30,000 feet has a way of bringing you into the moment. This is my sixth trip to Japan. My second "major" tour. I remember my first real trip here, where every little detail rang with poetic urgency. Filled with expectations. Pre-conceived notions. But the beauty of having gone now as many times as I have, is that each time it seems that I'm less encumbered with both memories of the past, and expectations of the future. Yet the magic of the moment, and moments, remain.
 
I think of how fortunate I am, to be leading a life that not only allows me the freedom to do this, but has fostered being drawn to Asia itself. And in that, a renewed perspective of myself, and my home.

I'm also fortunate to have the many people in my life that have made this trip, and what I do, possible – the people at my 'day job,' Atusko san -my translator, tutor, and assistant, Hiro san, Duane, our road manager, the folks at DelOro Music in LA, Taeko san, Satomi san, and last but not least, the BAND – Christina Rasch and Jessica Fagre.

DAY 1
The first day began with an irreverent walk to the Imperial Palace.

 
Then our first show in Tokyo/Akihabara - at DressTokyo.

DAY 2 - Tokyo's Meguro district
 
Before the show, the real deal - at a lovely, family-run sushi bar around the corner.
Center- Duane, our road-manager, and 3 lovely artists who came to the show after dinner, and of course, Christina, who later perfomed daring feats of manual dexterity with chopsticks.
The show was at MapleHouse in Meguro. We did an hour show to a packed house and came back for an encore. THE CROWD WAS AWESOME!!! And the first bands were great - There was an acoustic/electric named MAH with great vocals and instrumentation, and a Clapton tribute band called LAID BACK HOURS that was fun too.

DAY 3 -
Jet-lag and excitement continue to rob us of sleep, but the momentum seems to be more than making up for it. Hiro san came to escort us for some sightseeing before making our way to the live house for the show later on.
First, we went to Ueno Park for that must-see event - cherry blossom viewing, or "o-hanami." It is truly spectacular to see, but when you're in it, when you're there, surrounded by the colors, the people, there is a deeper resonance in participating in such a time-honored tradition, that honors that part of us that seeks out beauty, and comaraderie, and somehow a perfect stillness exists in the hustle-bustle of tens of thousands of people, all going to the same place for the same thing.
 
From Ueno, we went to Asakusa - one of the last stronholds of traditional Japan in Tokyo - with Temples, shrines, a Tori gate, hundreds of food, clothing, and souvenier booths, and of course, thousands of people, taking in a sunny, Sunday afternoon. We enjoyed yaki soba and then gave the octupus dumpling balls a try - actually quite good!

It was a memorable night at the show at Soundstream in Chiba. It felt like a homecoming, with Hiro san having arranged everything - First a jazzy, acoustic/electric band called AMBITION SOUND played, then "Hiro and Nana" acoustic guitar and violin, with superb vocals. Hiro san just had to play a song by our mutual friend, a singer-songwriter diva that I wrote "I Let Her In" about, and who also broke my heart...It was an emotional song to hear, and very beatitful. Then, Okano san's band ODDS 'N' SODS played and kicked it out with blistering versions of country-alt cover tunes, and their own songs, too.

Our set was again an hour long, and once again we were honored to be called back for an encore. It was truly a memorable night...
At one point, in between songs, I pulled out the digital camera and took pictures of the crowd, they were AWESOME!!!

DAY 4 - (day off / train to Hakone)
Still buzzing from the excitement of the last couple of shows, we made our way to the Shinkansen/Bullet Train to go to Hakone – a beautiful mountain, hot-spring town in the shadow of Mt. Fuji – for a day off. As it happens, the day was cool, overcast, and the higher up the mountain our taxi took us to get to the ryokan/inn, fog enveloped us as well as a fine drizzle, perfect weather for soaking in the beautiful, outdoor hot springs.
 
The meals there were amazing – a feast for the eyes, as well as the body.
And our hostess – Michiko – was an absolute sweetheart. She spoke to the girls in English, and to me in Japanese, and called me "Michele" after gracing me with her version of the beatles song "michelle, ma belle" .

DAY 5, 6, and 7 - to Kyoto
 
Once again, hopping on a bullet train, we made our way to that venerable, historic city...Kyoto. As it was another day off for us, we hooked up with my friend Satomi, and went sightseeing. In Japan cherry blossom viewing is a national institution, and timing one's visit to coincide with this auspicious event, which lasts only about a week, can be tricky. But somehow, we ended up here at exactly the right time - It is truly a soul-inspiring, beautiful thing to experience....
The show in Kyoto was a BLAST! The other bands were a lot of fun - a goth/metal band called G.I.F.Liquidbrains, a masked dynamic trio that reminded me of Aquabats... There were some great friends I'd met on previous trips to Kyoto, some new ones from MySpace and MIXI, and a great crowd all in all...

Day 8 - Osaka
We trained from Kyoto to Osaka (about 45 minutes) and played at a beautiful downtown club called the Flamingo.

During the tour, we've been paired with everything from "Sonic Death Monkeys" metal bands, to punk-pop-goth bouncing bettys. But the truth is, the level of talent here is amazing. Happily, the lineup of bands tonight was awesome - the acoustic guitar and percussion of "Sumpler Numpler" and the beautiful, Enigma-meets-Enya music of "Cojok."

DAY 9 Osaka and Kobe
We started out the day with a trip to the infamous Osaka Castle, and the breathtaking surrounding park...
 
Then Duane drove us to Kobe (about an hour) for the show at Pi:z Kobe. The fans and other bands were AWESOME!!!

DAY 10 - To Nagoya
We rode in the tour van from Osaka to Nagoya (about 2 hours) and got to the MUSIC FARM in time for sound check. It was a rockin last show for the tour, then went out to celebrate, and back to the Sakae/downtown area where our hotel was.

DAY 11-  Going home
After a last breakfast together at the hotel in Nagoya, we board a shuttle to Nagoya airport. As we speed by countless nearby buildings, signs, and cars, I notice the distant mountains, relatively constant by contrast. I think of the many new friends and acquaintances we've made, and the places that have come and gone, and also the handful of truly enduring, faithful friends I've made over the last few years there. Hiro san, who set up a show in Tokyo, took us out the first night, sent us all beautiful, gift-wrapped,  Japanese geisha dolls to our hotel in Nagoya, and lent his constant support by phone, email, and in his good heart.
And of Satomi, who took us sightseeing in Kyoto, went to all four of the shows in the Kansai region, some as far away as 2 hours by train, brought us presents, and made sure we were never wanting for anything.
Back in San Francisco, Atsuko was the one who set up most of the shows, booked the hotels, and scolded me for my poor Japanese
The true worth of this tour was not in how many shows we packed the house, although we did; not in the number of CDs I sold, although I did; and definitely not in the money that was made – quite the contrary – touring Japan is a costly endeavor. But the true worth of this tour, for me, was the reaction I got when everynight on stage (in Japanese) I would say that "I hope that Japan and America become better friends." Every night, that line would get a round of cheers and applause – even from the most jaded kids. And that is what this tour has been all about. Right there. Right now. Be here now.

That "One Thing"...

Joan Baez was clear, "... we can't change the world, but we can pick one thing. One thing, and we bloody well bash on..." That was many years ago, and yet the sentiment hasn't changed a bit. In fact, I take great comfort in it right now, with our city, our country, and our world in such turmoil. To me, it's overwhelming to ask myself what I can do about homelessness, race relations, terrorism, and the myriad other things that complicate our world. And I also don't want to fall into the trap of fixating on these things in order to take the attention away from my own shortcomings and my own Path.


We all have commitments in our lives that offer opportunities to be of service - our families, our work, friends...  And we're doubly blessed if we have that *one thing* that we can do, that's bigger than just us. And in sharing it with the world we can become these clear, little channels of connection, and be an instrument in that symphony that strains to be heard above the cacophony...

2016 – New Year, New Music, New Michael…

1/17/16 - A couple of years ago, I sat down with a  trusted writer friend, Stacie Tamaki, and asked her what I should do about my dated, neglected website – replete with photos and stories of the excesses of yesteryear. We both agreed to think about it and consider it a ‘work in progress…’ 
Then came 2015. Divorce, health issues, business volatility… until around October, when I was able to start prefacing my response to how I’m doing with “Having come through the crucible of 2015…” and look around in amazement and gratitude for all of the good that has come and continues to come into my life.
 
The shift started a couple of years ago, when my beloved yoga teacher, Daniela Kosmalski, asked me to accompany her on a couple of mantras at the end of her yoga classes. The momentum that was created then started a resurgence in me, with a  return to the pranayama meditation taught to me so long ago by my teacher, Eddie-ji, in LA, and a healthier/sober lifestyle that connected, really connected me with the people around me, and my Path before me.

I discovered the harmonium in September, and with practice and great examples set by the artists on a similar Path (with much more experience!) like Girish, Krishna Das, Wah! and David Newman, have been blessed to be a part of Community Kirtan gatherings, yoga classes, and blessed collaborations with revered teachers/artists such as Jennifer Holt, and  Charonpal Kaur.

I’m just a work in progress, as is the new website, but as 2016 unfolds, am deeply grateful to those who have been patient with me, been supportive, and given me the encouragement to build those ‘bridges’ and forge those connections that make this life, this moment, so precious…

"Rock of Ages" Resurrects the Rockin 80s

"This place is about to become a sea of sweat, ear-shattering music and puke. So start drinking…now!" bellows out club owner Dennis Dupree (Alec Baldwin) and ahh... I'm home again - That home to me and my tribe in the late 80s, prowling Sunset Boulevard in boots, big hair, and leather. Looking for fame, fun, loud music, and love. We found a little of each back then, and now everyone can - in "Rock of Ages"!

Living a similar parallel life back then, Stacy was my perfect companion to see this movie. We didn't go expecting much, but this over-the-top anthemic 80s musical (yes, musical) blew us away in so many ways. Started out simple enough - Small town girl Sherrie and city boy Drew, who meet on the Sunset Strip while pursuing their Hollywood dreams. Their rock ‘n’ roll romance is told through the heart-pounding hits of Def Leppard, Joan Jett, Journey, Foreigner, Bon Jovi, Night Ranger, REO Speedwagon, Pat Benatar, Twisted Sister, Poison, Whitesnake, and more.

But the movie takes so many cool, unexpected twists and turns, and in doing so somehow:
* conjurs the cool, insider's POV like Spinal Tap did,  but characterized and satirized in a fun way rather than the depricating spiral that Spinal Tap was
* doesn't allow Tom Cruise's Stacee Jaxx to descend into the nihilistic tailspin of Pink in "The Wall"
* doesn't even come close to the cheesy camp of other rock musicals like "Mamma Mia"

It found redeeming qualities in characters that Hollywood usually milks for their "train-wreck" value, and managed to not take itself too seriously, but without any Will Farrell-style goofiness. It was at the same time an homage, a roast, and even documentary of a time that those of us that were there remember with a smile, a cringe, and a sigh...
Way to go, Hollywood, this time you got it right. You can still rock in America!

"In Paris"...We're not in Santa Cruz anymore...

We'd had our noses to the grindstone, and it had been too long since we'd escaped this land of tie-dye and tofu to, well, another land of tie-dye and tofu - Berkeley. But on Saturday night, it wasn't Berkeley we were in, we were In Paris via Berkeley. First up, a mind-blowing French dinner at Bistro Liaison, then Mikhail Baryshnikov at the Berkeley Rep Theater - In Paris.

Bistro Liaison, aptly described as "French food for the soul," was lively, yet warm and intimate, and exotic, yet the menu and waitstaff somehow make you feel right at home (or maybe it was leading off with an exquisite cocktail of gin, lavender, and grapefruit juice that did it).
I was feeling adventurous, and tried the escargot, which were amazingly good - poached snails in garlic parsley butter with Pastis - and user-friendly, unassumingly bedded in their marinade/tapenade rather than hiding in their shells.


Next came the pièce de résistance, an other-worldly seafood dish called Sole Farcie - a Petrale sole filled with Dungeness crab baked in a shrimp & Cognac cream sauce. This was one of those times that you discover a food that tastes nothing like you've ever had before, and you don't want it to end. Stacy was almost as enthralled with her Salmon Paillard - Grilled salmon topped with tapenade on a bed of roasted beets, saffron aioli & toasted fennel powder.

After sharing each other's entrees, we figured it would be hard to follow these acts, but the Profiteroles were literally the icing on the cake.


And so we strolled a few blocks and got to the theater with time to spare and enjoyed the photo displays in the lobby, books in the shop, and diverse and lively mix of theater-goers about to be treated to this epic performance.

In Paris uses a nuanced, complex theatrical vocabulary of music, film, mime, video, even an actress flying dreamily suspended by wires, and exerpts of Russian and French to explore the relationship between an older man and a younger woman and its larger theme of profound loneliness.

The story focuses on Baryshnikov's general, who moved to Paris years ago, after his wife left him following the war for a younger man in Constantinople. While in the City of Lights, he meets a beautiful waitress (Anna Sinyakina) whose husband is away at war in Yugoslavia, and we see their relationship blossom. The story is one of loneliness and despair and eventual happiness and acceptance as two foreigners with a common bond find each other in a not-so-new city.

By play's end, the audience was mezmerized, thrilled, and thoroughly satisfied and showed our appreciation with a standing ovation lasting 4 or 5 curtain calls. We learned that the company is headed to Italy, and then Lincoln Center in New York City to no doubt thrill audiences there as well. What great fortune that we were able to experience such a getaway right here, in our own backyard...
